In the modern world of “click and deliver,” there is a misconception that a courier is simply a courier. Whether it’s a pair of shoes, a smartphone, or a 185kg industrial firepit, the average consumer and many retailers assume the process is the same.
At Heavy Weight Couriers, we see things differently. We get asked all the time:“Can you deliver this small box for me?”Our answer is usually a polite“No.” It isn’t because we can’t handle small parcels; it’s because we have spent over a decade perfecting the art of the “difficult.” We aren’t DPD or Amazon. We don’t do “small” because “small” doesn’t require the specialised equipment, the 12 years of removal expertise, and the heavy-lift fleet that we’ve invested in. We built this business to solve the logistics nightmares that the parcel giants ignore.
The “30kg Threshold”: Where Logistics Gets Serious
Why 30kg? In the transport industry, 30kg is more than just a number on a scale; it is the point where standard parcel networks begin to fail.
Most national courier networks are built on a foundation of automation. They rely on massive, high-speed conveyor belts and automated “sorter” arms that kick parcels into various bins based on their postcodes. This system is efficient for a 2kg box of clothes. It is a disaster for a 40kg engine part, a 60kg “Bomber” e-bike, or a 130cm-long firepit.
When an item hits 30kg, it enters a different world of logistics. It becomes “Ugly Freight.”
Why “Manual Handling” Trumps “Automation” for Heavy Loads
The dirty secret of the parcel industry is that heavy items often damage the very machines meant to sort them. Or, more commonly, the machines damage the items. A 50kg crate moving at high speed on a belt cannot be “stopped” gently by a robotic arm.
Our Philosophy: No Belts. No Machines. Just People. At our hubs in Glasgow, Nottingham, Aberdeen, Inverness, and Oban, you won’t find a single conveyor belt. We are a “hand-handled” operation. Every single item that enters our ecosystem is:
- Hand-Picked: Carefully selected and checked against the manifest.
- Hand-Packed: Secured within our vehicles using high-tensile strapping and custom padding.
- Hand-Delivered: Carried into the room of choice by a removal-trained 2-man team.
By removing the machines, we remove the risk. We don’t “sort” your goods; we handle them.
The Fleet: From 14 Dedicated Vans to 44ft Artics and Moffetts
To handle “non-standard” freight, you need a non-standard fleet. Most couriers have a fleet of identical white vans. We have a specialised arsenal.
- The 14-Van Rapid Response Network: Our vans cover the UK and Ireland daily. These aren’t just empty boxes on wheels; they are equipped with ramps, heavy-duty dollies, and the securing points necessary for high-value items like e-bikes and furniture.
- 7.5T and 18T Rigids: Perfect for regional distribution and high-volume furniture runs, equipped with tail-lifts to ensure we never have to “manhandle” an item off a high deck.
- The 44ft Artics: Our muscle. We use these for trunking between our Livingston, Inverness, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Oban and Nottingham units. This allows us to move huge volumes of ScS sofas or Trek e-bikes across the country before breaking them down for final-mile delivery.
- Moffett Truck-Mounted Forklifts: Our “secret weapon.” A Moffett allows us to deliver to sites where no forklift is available—like a private garden in the Highlands or a construction site in the Midlands. We bring our own off-loading solution to the door
Strategic Hubs: Closing the Geographic Gap
Our hubs in Glasgow, Nottingham, Inverness, Oban, and Aberdeen form a straight line across the UK.
- The Nottingham Hub: Our “Midlands Gateway.” This unit allows us to collect from English manufacturers and sellers on eBay/Amazon, consolidating heavy goods before they head North or cross the water to Ireland.
- The Glasgow Head Office: The heart of the Central Belt, connecting our removal expertise with our high-volume haulage.
- The Oban and Inverness Units: Our specialists in the “Difficult North.” While other couriers sub-contract the Highlands and Islands, we handle it ourselves. We know the ferry lanes to the Western Isles and the single-track roads of the North Coast.
- The New Aberdeen Hub: Specifically launched to support major contracts like ScS, ensuring that “North Scotland” is no longer a logistical headache but a streamlined process.
The Technology of Trust: Track-POD
We use Track-POD to bring 21st-century transparency to the heavy-lift sector. Our customers—from individual eBay sellers to global brands like Trek and Giant—get:
- Real-Time Live Tracking: Know exactly where your 50kg consignment is at any moment.
- Communication: Texts and emails keep the end customer informed, reducing failed deliveries.
- Digital Proof of Delivery (ePOD): Photos and signatures are captured and sent instantly, providing a trail that standard networks simply don’t match.
Conclusion: If It’s Heavy, It Belongs with Us
You can send your heavy, oversized, or irregularly shaped item through a parcel network and hope it survives the conveyor belts, the automated sorters, and the solo driver who wasn’t expecting a 50kg box.
Or, you can choose the specialists.
At Scotland’s Courier Company and Heavy Weight Couriers, we draw the line at 30kg because we believe that heavy goods deserve a solution. We don’t do small. We do right.
Whether it’s a bespoke e-bike or 60 sofas a week, we have the fleet, the hubs, and the 12 years of removal-trained experience to get the job done.
